Job Description:

Alfred University invites candidates to apply for the position of Career Counselor. This position will assist students and recent alumni from a wide variety of diverse backgrounds throughout all phases of the career development process from the discovery and exploration of majors and career options to assistance with the applied learning, full-time job, and/or graduate school search and application process. The successful candidate will meet with students 1:1, in group settings, and also through facilitation of classroom presentations and workshops. In addition, the successful candidate will be responsible for creating and implementing career development programming for all students, with a specific focus on our College of Liberal Arts & Sciences, School of Art & Design, and Performing Arts Division.Responsibilities:

  • Counsel undecided students through the career exploration process, including choosing a major/career path.
  • Be aware of industry trends, and career readiness needs for students in these programs.
  • Guide students through self-assessments, and administer and interpret the MBTI and Strong Interest Inventory.
  • Assist students with strategies for effective job & graduate school searches.
  • Assist students with professional documents including resume and cover letters, as well as professional identity including LinkedIn and Handshake profiles, websites, and portfolios.
  • Work with students on interviewing skills, networking opportunities, and salary negotiation skills.
  • Prepare career counseling surveys, and annual reports for stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with the Assistant Director/Coordinator of Employer Relations to connect students with targeted employers and opportunities.
  • Collaborate with faculty and staff across campus on career related programming.
  • Collaborate with the Center for Academic Success to identify and implement resources for students with disabilities.
  • Present to prospective students, and their support network, on CDC services.
  • Develop and present skill development workshops to include resume preparation, job/internship search strategies, salary negotiation, networking strategies, etc.
  • Assist with and support all Career Development Center events.
  • Supervise and train Peer Advisors, Graduate Assistants, Undergraduate Interns, etc.
  • In collaboration with the Director and Assistant Director of Employer Relations and Event Planning, the Career Counselor will assist with the first destinations outcomes data, collection, and reporting.
  • Grow and maintain career development resources and promotional materials.
  • Provide effective support to students in finding, and applying to applied learning, and full-time job opportunities.
  • Facilitate and promote career events.Requirements:
    • Education: Master's degree in counseling, higher education administration, or related field preferred; bachelor's degree with significant experience required.
    • Experience: Preferred experience in career services, and college advising in a student-facing role, with experience working directly with liberal arts, and art & design and performing arts students.
    • Ability to effectively counsel/advise college students in the areas of career planning and academic development.
    • Have an understanding of career development theory.
    • Demonstrated ability to use assessment instruments.
    • An awareness of career development trends, workforce development and employer needs.
    • Must be able to assist students in the fine art and creative fields with resume, portfolio, and website reviews.
    • Must be deadline-oriented, good at multi-tasking, and committed to quick, accurate turnaround of assignments.
    • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including public speaking and presenting, as facilitation of workshops for students, faculty, staff, and parents will be required.
    • A customer service-oriented style, effective in building relationships through in-person, phone and online networking required.
    • High level of cultural sensitivity and strong interest in working with a diverse population.
    • Willingness to develop as a professional in an office that must be responsive to changing job markets and career/student development trends.
    • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, exhibiting strong time management skills, strategic thinking, sound judgment, and a sense of humor.
    • Demonstrated experience in event and program planning and management
    • Attention to detail, data management using Handshake, and ability to collect and analyze learning outcomes and career counseling surveys to write annual reports.
    • High level of computer expertise, including database administration, proficiency in MS Office programs, and also social media platforms.
