Description Summary: Working closely with Marketing, Research and Development, Plants, Engineering, and Purchasing the Packaging Engineer is responsible for providing development and value analysis support to ensure that the plant locations are able to identify, develop, and maximize relationships with suppliers who primarily provide supplies and machinery for our manufacturing locations. Focus of the effort is to ensure systems and procedures relating to purchasing are coordinated in order to have as much flexibility as possible regarding production between plant locations and reducing the number of inventoried items by making more items common to all plants. Frequent travel will be required. Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assignedWork on cross-functional teams (Marketing, R&D, Quality, Plants, Engineering and Purchasing) to develop, design, test and make packaging recommendations for new and existing (line extensions) productsCreate and develop new packaging designs, graphic templates, and redesigns. Use of computer system (AUTOCAD) to complete process.Analyze, Develop and implement cost savings based upon packaging savings, as well could include machinery upgrades or changes.Analysis the technical packaging and machinery aspects used by LAG. Utilize information to assist in negotiation of fair price base.Develop good understanding of the production machinery in relationship to the packaging used at each Plant. Assist in the plant development of uniform packaging structures when applicable.General knowledge of packaging machinery, material handling, and automation that relates to Packaging.Assist Buyers at all locations with any issues relating to packaging concernsSource and investigate new innovative ideas throughout the industry to inform Marketing and plants of the newest innovations that may benefit our product lines. This process can be done through publications, shows, networking with Suppliers, product displays in the market place. Will continually assess Suppliers to ensure that our company receives updated innovations and new packaging ideas.Act as a key member of Lactalis sustainability initiatives. To identify opportunities, quantifying achievements, and ensuring timely execution of projects at our plants, co-packers, and for imported products.Exchange information with Corporate Headquarters in France to benefit in package designs, specifications and machinery.Responsible for the completion of the technical changes needed in transferring purchases to a new packaging Supplier, moving production from one plant to another.Technically assist in sourcing and qualifying Suppliers. This will include site visits. Assist in Setting up procedures for evaluating potential suppliers packaging products. This evaluation should involve the plants, marketing and R&D.Responsible to update the different die lines and the palette patternsAssist in the research and compiling of all purchasing information relating to technical packaging and machinery including price history, quality, and service etc. for bid proposals.Assist in analyzing market and delivery conditions to determine present and future material availability and/or pricing.Assist in preparing bid proposals, analysis and summarizing technical responses.Travel and / or extended or off work hours may be required.This description reflects management s assignment of essential functions, it does not proscribe or restrict the tasks that may be assigned.To fulfill these responsibilities, tools such as a computer, phone, and / or allowance(s) may be provided.Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform these Essential Duties and Responsibilities. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.EducationBachelors degree required; preferred in Packaging ScienceExperienceMinimum 2 years of experience is requiredExperience in Food Industry preferredSpecialized KnowledgeOSHA, Food Safety, FDA and USDA;Knowledge of ISO and certifications within the food industry (FSSC, ISO 9001);Computers and Systems (Microsoft Word, manufacturing operating systems)Skills / AbilitiesEffective and proficient communicator, written and verbal;Business acumen to include problem solving and analysis;Able to manage time through efficient planning and organizing
