Job Description:
The Licensed Practical Nurse delivers nursing care to residents
as required, and administers medications.A. Education and Training
- Currently licensed and registered to practice as a practical
nurse in New York State. Current cardiopulmonary resuscitation
(CPR) certification issued by either the American Heart Association
or the American Red Cross. Must be interested in gaining knowledge
of new procedures and methods through seminars and inservices. The
individual could also be a graduate of a practical nursing program
in New York State who has applied for a permit.B. Experience - The
Licensed Practical Nurse must have the ability to work under the
supervision of an R.N., must possess knowledge and experience in
pharmacology and have an understanding of untoward and adverse drug
reactions and the ability to recognize symptoms of such; must also
have knowledge and/or experience in the administration of direct
care.C. Character - Must be of good moral character having patience
and compassion for the elderly; must be cooperative, professional
in appearance, and keep all resident information in strictest
confidence.*III. Essential Job Functions*
- Read, write, speak, hear, reason and remember.
- Stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, stand, walk, push, pull, and lift
medium weight (25-50 lbs.).
- Administer medications and perform treatments as outlined in
facility policies and procedures.
- Must be willing and able to perform basic life support (BLS) at
all times, including CPR, the Heimlich maneuver and rescue
breathing.
- Perform all job duties and responsibilities as outlined below
in IV.*IV. Job Duties and Responsibilities*The LPN is supervised by
a registered nurse. The job duties and responsibilities are to be
performed while observing the following standards: job standard
(knowledge, ability, skills), technical skill, quality, quantity,
judgement/problem solving, decision making, and initiative. The
responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:A.
Deliver direct resident care and assist nurse's aides when
necessary.B. Deliver resident care, treatments and medication
administration to assigned residents.C. Report to supervisor the
condition of residents and result of treatment.D. Report to
physician the condition of residents, take off orders, documents,
and follow-up orders to their conclusion.E. Document pertinent
information on all assigned residents.F. Arrange for transfer of
residents to hospitals or clinics.G. Maintain records of all
controlled drugs and keep inventory count at the beginning and end
of each shift.H. Check residents' comfort, follow-up as necessary,
answer call bell as required.I. Collect tests and report specimens
as necessary.J. Perform other nursing duties as required.K.
Responsible for knowing and following residents plan of care for
assigned residents.L. Responsible to report any employees not
following plan of care.M. Perform other related duties as required
by their manager.*V. General Duties and Responsibilities*A.
Participate in all department meetings, mandated inservices, and
assigned committees.B. Maintain a positive and professional
relationship with residents, registrants, family members, legal
representatives and visitors.C. Maintain a positive and
professional relationship with all personnel, including
supervisors, co-workers and volunteers.D. Follow all safety
regulations and precautions at all times; use protective devices as
required.E. Wear and maintain proper uniform/clothing as
established in the uniform dress code policy, including name tag
identification. Maintain acceptable personal hygiene.F. Maintain
confidentiality and resident/patient/registrant rights.G. Maintain
confidentiality of all issues and subject matters, including
records, reports, data and other related sensitive materials.H.
Maintain an acceptable attendance rate.I. Follow all laws, rules
and regulations of the Federal and NYS Health Codes in regard to
the department and overall organization operations.*VI. Working
Environment*The worker is subject to inside environmental
conditions and protection from weather conditions. The worker may
also be exposed to odors and fumes or mist from medications.*VII.
Exposure to Blood and Airborne Pathogens*This position has been
categorized into Occupational Safety and Health Administration
(OSHA) Category 1: routine contact with blood/body fluids of
persons living or non-living. Contact can be made while performing
personal care, handling regulated medical waste and in clean up of
spills and other blood/body fluid accidents. Protective equipment
should be utilized when performing these tasks.*VIII. General*This
