Job Description:

The Chief Financial Officer/Controller is responsible for providing fiscal strategic leadership for the agency by working with the senior management team to establish long-range goals, strategies, plans and policies. They direct and manages the agency's finance department. This includes strategic planning, financial analysis, policy development, internal controls and problem resolution. Please note that the position will be either a CFO or Controller contingent on the candidate's experience and qualifications. Major Responsibilities/Activities:

  • Plan, develop, organize, implement, direct, and evaluate the organization's fiscal function and performance
  • Ensures financial best practices are implemented and documented along with adequate internal controls to safeguard all organizational assets
  • Participate in the development of the corporation's plans and programs as a strategic partner
  • Evaluate and advise on the impact of long-range planning, introduction of new programs/strategies and regulatory action
  • Effectively use financial modeling, scenario planning, and business analytics for decision making
  • Develop credibility for the finance group by providing timely and accurate analysis of budgets, financial reports and financial trends in order to assist the Board and CEO in performing their responsibilities
  • Assess, enhance and/or develop, implement and enforce policies and procedures of the organization by way of systems that will improve the overall operation and effectiveness of the corporation
  • Ensure adequate systems and internal controls are in place for monitoring, reporting, and complying with external grants awarded to the organization from governments, foundations and other entities
  • Evaluate the risks facing the organization and ensure that activities and operations are adequately insured
  • Provide technical financial advice and knowledge to others within the financial discipline
  • Participate in continual improvement of the budgeting process through education of department managers on financial issues impacting their budgets
  • Provide strategic financial input and leadership on decision-making issues affecting the organization: i.e., evaluation of potential alliances, acquisitions, mergers, pension funds and investments
  • Provide advice to the Human Resources Director and CEO with benefits management and selection
  • Optimize the handling of bank and deposit relationships and initiate appropriate strategies to enhance cash position
  • Develop a reliable cash flow projection process and reporting mechanism that includes minimum cash threshold to meet operating needs
  • Evaluate the finance division structure and team plan for continual improvement of the efficiency and effectiveness of the group and provide individuals with professional and personal growth
  • Attend and lead finance and committee meetings for the Board of Directors, including preparation of financial statements. In addition, attend executive committee and Board of Directors meetings as needed
  • Attend to and assist with the Say Yes Buffalo Scholarship and Endowment funds (held at the Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo), including support in tracking pledges/gifts and annual reminder letters to individuals and foundation who have made pledges
  • Lead the annual audit, including audit schedules, preparing the preliminary trial balance, working with the auditors during fieldwork, and reviewing draft audited financial statements
  • Lead the annual IRS Form 990 submission, including providing schedules to the auditors, reviewing the draft 990, ensuring board review, and filing of the return
  • Provide advice regarding insurance, risk management and legal matters, including contracts and leases
  • Management of the Finance team, including outsourced functions
  • Models and practices sensitivity, fair treatment and acceptance of diversity, equity and inclusion in all interpersonal interactions
  • Shows willingness to learn about and implement skills related to diversity
  • Complies with all agency policies and procedures
  • 8 to 10 years of relevant work experience
  • At least 3 year's experience in a not-for-profit environment
  • Must have a minimum of 5 years management and supervisory experience
  • Degree in Accounting
  • CPA certification (preferred)
  • Valid NYS Driver's License

    • Judgment-the individual demonstrates the ability and willingness to make timely decisions based on sound and accurate analysis
    • Planning/organizing-the individual displays the ability to plan and prioritize work activities; uses time efficiently and develop realistic action plans
