Job Description:
The German Area Studies Program at Hobart and William Smith
Colleges invites applications for a Visiting Assistant Professor to
begin August 1, 2026. This is a full-time, one-year position with a
teaching load of five courses over two semesters. The appointment
has the possibility for renewal contingent on successful annual
review and ongoing curricular needs. The successful candidate will
teach four German language courses at the beginning, intermediate,
and advanced levels and teach one topics course in a related field
such as media and visual culture, environmental studies, Gender and
Women’s studies, or (post)colonial studies. In all courses,
teaching approaches and materials should foster an inclusive
environment that welcomes and supports diverse people and ideas.
Experience with and/or interest in working in a multicultural
environment, and supporting and encouraging excellence from
students with diverse and varied backgrounds and experiences is
highly desirable. Minimum requirements: M.A. in German
language/literature/culture/second language acquisition/applied
linguistics at the time of appointment (ABD or PhD preferred),
native or near-native fluency in German and English, significant
teaching experience of German as a second/foreign language (college
level) at different levels, broad-ranging expertise in current
methodologies, as well as expertise in the integration of
technology in the classroom. Research profile in foreign language
pedagogy or teaching-oriented perspectives on literature and
culture, as well as experience working with the Auf geht’s!
curriculum a plus. About HWS A liberal arts and sciences
