CSI is a unique community-based school that has emerged as a trusted institution for families in its Eastside neighborhood.CSI successfully implements its unique, ground-breaking key design elements. Most notably, the school-wide use of the Inquiry Learning Model that fosters critical thinking and problem solving, and African and African American infusion into all curricular areas, which allows all children to benefit from a better understanding of the history, culture, and contributions of people of African descent.Parents are overwhelmingly pleased with CSI, as evidenced by an 90% student retention rate, 100% of parents indicating that they are either highly satisfied or satisfied on an independent survey administered by Daemen College, an overall increase in enrollment of 31%, and waiting lists in most grades.CSI recognizes the urgency of educating the whole child, and that the social curriculum is as important as the academic curriculum if students are to achieve at high levels. CSI offers a wide-range of extra-curricular programs, values field trips and in-school presentations, and offers a free extended-day program. The school-wide implementation of the Responsive Classroom approach and Restorative Justice practices has significantly reduced student suspension in the last two years.
SummaryThe Classroom Teacher demonstrates mastery in the area of children's development of cognitive and social skills. They implement the Common Core Standards and work collaboratively with instructional personnel to help develop an interdisciplinary curriculum that adheres to the mission, vision, and values of the school.Responsibilities

  • Create an inviting, exciting, and innovative learning environment. Plan and implement instructional units which adhere to the New York State standards and the curriculum, mission and vision of the Charter School of Inquiry.
  • Attend and participate in all professional development for instructional personnel including but not limited to professional development in the responsive classroom approach, literacy and inquiry-based instruction and the infusion of African-American history and culture.
  • Assess and evaluate student progress.
  • Utilize formal and informal assessments to plan the instructional program.
  • Work with Literacy and Inquiry Coaches to review student assessment data and create differentiated individual instruction plans (IIP's) for each student.
    • Collaborate with other faculty to meet program requirements of the Charter School of Inquiry.
    • Coordinate with special education and ESL teachers to plan and implement program appropriate to children's IEP's and language learning needs.
      • Maintain open communication with parents or guardians, including monthly phone calls to each student's parents or guardian, newsletters, progress reports and other forms of communication as required.
      • Maintain a classroom environment conducive to learning by establishing and implementing appropriate classroom management.
      • Adhere to all dress standards and policies.
      • Perform other duties, as required.Minimum QualificationsBachelor's degree from an accredited college or universityValid New York State Teaching CertificatePreferred QualificationsMaster's degree from an accredited college of universityTwo years of teaching experience
